David Huan

For over 20 years, David has successfully coached and managed youth volleyball programs across the Bay Area. As one of the founders and club directors of Red Rock Volleyball Club, he has strived to deliver a first-class experience and develop athletes to their full potential. Since 2006, over 90 teams in his club programs have qualified for Junior Olympics/Nationals.

In the club's first season in the Tri-Valley, David coached the 13s team in Danville and where the team qualified for USAV Junior Nationals in Indianapolis, IN. Last season, he coached the 15s team that earned a bid to compete at GJNC in Chicago, IL.

Prior to the pandemic, David coached 18 club teams on the Peninsula over the course of 12 years across the 12-18s age groups—all of whom qualified for Junior Olympics/Junior Nationals. In 2018, his 18U team finished 3rd with a bronze medal at Jr Nationals. Prior to that, in 2017 and 2016, his 18U teams qualified for 18 Open and both finished 11th. During that span, those teams also won NCVA Regional Championships, and earned 5 medals in the Open Divisions at prominent National Qualifiers and Tournaments.

Some of David’s other past club experience include coaching the following age groups:

12U (2008,2010) – Gold Medal at Colorado Crossroads; 2x Top 20 at JNC

13U (2011,2013,2022) - NCVA Champions; 1st FWQ; Top 5 and 25 in 13-Open at JNC

14U (2006,2007,2012,2019) - NCVA Champions; 14-Open Top 20 at JNC

15U (2008,2018,2023) - Top 25 at JNC

16U (2009,2012) - Top 5 at JNC; 16-Open Bronze Medal at JNC

17U (2014) - Top 3 Region Finish; Qualified 17-National

18U (2015,2016,2017) – Silver Medal at GSQ; Bronze Medal at TCNIT; Bronze Medal at JNC, 2x 11th 18-Open at JNC

Most of his teams have finished top 5 in the region, with several 1st place finishes, along with a number of medal finishes at Triple Crown NIT, Far Western, Pacific Northwest, and Colorado Crossroads Qualifiers.

David has also coached at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels. He most recently led the varsity program at St. Ignatius College Prep with his wife Marietta, as they took over the program in 2016 and finished 3rd in State in the Open Division ranking 1st in their state division, and a final 27th place National Ranking with a team that previously finished ranked 447th. Following that year, he was named Mercury News’ Coach of the Year. In 2017, SI once again qualified for the State Open Division and ranked 2nd in their state division.

As a transplant from Southern California, David graduated from the University of California-Berkeley, and has enjoyed living in the Bay Area ever since. For more than a decade, he worked in the digital education industry and was part of a groundbreaking staff at Stanford University. During his free time, David enjoys daytrading, is an avid sports fan, and travels with his family. In 2017, he and his family moved to the Tri-Valley area and established Red Rock in the East Bay. Post-pandemic, they are planning to lay a foundation for a competitive club in the LaMorinda/Walnut Creek/Tri-Valley area in coming years.
